At the end of the movie, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's characters don't end up together, a fact that, anecdotally, has caused pretty much everyone I know who's seen it to say something

It’s the night of Mia’s one-woman show, and Sebastian is about to set off to see her, when he’s told he has to stay behind with the band for a photoshoot. Summary. A pool party. A-ha’s song ’Take On Me’ is playing and Mia wanders through the party, avoiding small talk with a writer whose self-congratulatory monologue propels her, alone, to the bar within about 10 seconds. Then making her way to where the band is playing, she sees Sebastian, on keys.
These things both manage to propel each person's respective dream, but the reactions from the other are why they can't end up together. So they each achieve their dream, and the core of the movie is that pursuing dreams is a foolish thing you may have to give up a lot for (a theme which Audition wears on its sleeve). It's a simple one, done well.
