The 990 has higher highs in particular. To me this made it sound sibilant (/ harsh) and was the main reason for the sale. It's a bit more open - the soundstage is better, but imaging is comparable from one to the other. The 880 has smoother treble and a better low end (but neither model excels here). The 770s are a lot flatter and are definitely suited more for production. The M50xs are very bass heavy and high heavy. They are more suited for live DJ-ing. Also, a lot of people have said the 770s are a lot more comfortable to wear for long periods of time, since they fit completely over most people's ears. While the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO and the Drop + Sennheiser/EPOS PC38X are both great choices for neutral sound, the Drop are a better choice for wired gaming. The Drop have a boom mic to record your voice clearly, even in moderately noisy environments. They're also more comfortable and have a mic as well as volume controls.
